Bursaries providing monetary support for a one-year trade or vocational training course in local post-school institutions and programmes
The students can choose any one-year course or training programme in Eswatini at a registered institution or through apprenticeship. We try to help them choose the courses that will lead them in the direction in which they see themselves developing professionally.
While studying, the students get monthly allowances to support their living expenses and ensure they can attend school. They also complete our Life Skills Training programme.
Workshops on the life skills one needs in order to find a job and keep it, and advance along one’s own career path
Our Life Skills Training is a mandatory programme for all bursary holders in their first year. Through workshops, the students develop their goals, vision, and action plan. They learn how to write a CV, ace a job interview, use social media to their advantage, write reports, and make healthy life choices.
The monthly workshop allows the beneficiaries to form new friendships and to network with peers they have not met before and from outside their communities. They learn about other people’s lives, share experiences and support each other. They then help each other with job searches and provide peer support when needed. The bonds that are formed in the first year may last for life.
Short-term projects to develop further skills among our graduates
We seek donor funding to support projects that help to build capacity among our graduates. Such a project was SPARK!, which developed entrepreneurial capacity within one group of our graduates.
In 2021–2022, we have identified leadership and food security skills as our top priority.
Workshops and courses on personal and professional development
Funded by the Likusasa Letfu members’ contributions to the organisation, the Advanced Training programme provides workshops and courses conducted by professionals on various topics, from how to raise strong kids, deal with COVID-19 or learn about African indigenous principles, to specialised workshops for preschool teachers or smallholder farmers. A celebration of subjects, ideas and activities. By giving back to the programme, the members support and take responsibility for their own development.
Members contributing back to the programme
Giving back is a cornerstone of the Likusasa Letfu model. In return for bursaries and allowances, each student agrees to pay back 25% of the total cost to the organisation once they have graduated. These contributions fund the Advanced Training programme. Paying it forward increases participation, builds commitment and ensures ownership of the programme by all participants. They support their own personal and professional development.
By January 22, 36 members (24%) had finished making their contributions and had completed the Likusasa Letfu journey. Most of them stay connected and play an active part in our activities.
Year-end hike and party
Eswatini mountains are high; their peaks touch the sky. At the end of every year, we choose one peak to summit. The mountain symbolises our lives: we set our goals, aim high, and know that our journey to the top follows the path on the hills. We have conquered Nyonyane, Sheba’s Breast and Sibebe.
We shall keep rising, setting new goals each year.
