Unlock Your Potential: Overcoming Barriers to Promotion in Eswatini’s Workforce
Are you a young person in Eswatini trying to grow in your job or get promoted? Many dreams of moving up, but it can be hard to understand what’s holding you back. At the 2025 Bushfire Festival, we spoke with employers about why some workers are not getting promoted. They shared three main reasons: poor attitude, lack of commitment, and not growing their skills.
- Your Attitude Matters
Employers often notice when someone is not interested in their work. If you’re just doing the bare minimum or always complaining, it shows. Managers want to promote people who are positive, respectful, and team players. Ask yourself: do I bring good energy to the workplace? Do I care about the company’s success as well as my own? - Show Commitment and Honesty
Getting promoted is not only about doing your job—it’s about doing it well and with purpose. A strong work ethic, honesty, and showing that you care about your role can set you apart. Being dependable and loyal are key signs that you are ready for more responsibility. - Keep Learning and Know Your Company
The world of work is changing fast. If you are not learning new skills or growing in your role, you might get left behind. Employers look for people who are open to learning and improving. Also, take time to learn about your company’s structure. Understand what skills are needed for promotion and work towards them.
Believe in Yourself
Sometimes, the biggest obstacle is inside you. Low self-confidence or fear of speaking up can stop your growth. Believe in your abilities. Share your ideas and take initiative.
Take the Next Step
If you’re serious about moving forward in your career, start by checking your attitude, your commitment, and your efforts to grow.
